Linux isn't ready for the typical desktop user...
Submitted by The Big Giant Head on June 5, 2008 - 7:36pm...I'm not going to go into a lengthy story, for that you can read this article (submitted by Kostamojan, who will never actually use his blog or write here even), and my own articles here and for sure HERE -- which appropriately sums up why Linux isn't ready for the typical desktop user.
My main motivation for writing this little blurb today is to laugh at the comments Linux fan boys leave.
For example:
No offense, but try getting compatible hardware next time. I’ve never heard anything good about printers from ‘brother’. Only problems and more problems.
COMPATIBLE HARDWARE? Didn't you read that the author tried to do just that? And more so, why does ANYONE need to go out of their way to ensure their damn printer is going to be easy to install? It should just work, period.
There are many other lengthy responses to his post, all jumping up and down on how easy it is to use/install things or whatever. But you know what? This isn't about people like me and Kostamojan who can hash out the tedious HOURS UPON HOURS it takes to solve problems in Linux, this is about the everyday user who isn't interested in command lines and simply expects everything to work.
Leopard runs a flavor of BSD under its hood, if you want an example of how a *nix/BSD style system should truly wind up, look at that. But Linux is just simply not ready for the prime time, there is no sugarcoating it.
IT WILL EVENTUALLY WIN AND DOMINATE. Make no mistake, I think it will. But it is going to take a LONG time for it to develop into a modern truly simple operating system.
If you can use it successfully and enjoy it, fine! Great! Have fun! Hack the planet! Whatever floats your boat, but for those out there that just expect their stuff to work then Leopard or Windows is for you.
Hell's Kitchen, Shot at Love II, and Bloodninja
Submitted by The Big Giant Head on June 4, 2008 - 8:44amHell's Kitchen
As always, this week proved to be very interesting. I tend to agree with Matt getting the shaft, but I wonder if they went out of their way to technically produce an image of him being more off-key than he really was. Everyone gets angry, sometimes we trash talk, but random scenes of him sharpening a knife and such I think were just cheap stunt blows to inflate drama.
In general, it seems this round of cooks is pretty weak. I certainly do not have any expert top-notch expectations of them all, but it seems that they should all be a bit better than what they are doing.
That said, why isn't Jen off this show by now? I really cannot stand watching her, in fact, if the segments with her talking lasted more than the typical 5 ish seconds, I'd defiantly fast forward through anything having to do with her, and if the show mainly consisted of people like her, I wouldn't even watch.
Does every reality-type show have to have one big evil nemesis to be successful? I don't think so, such people hanging around seriously question the ideals of these sort of elimination shows in theory.
Which leads me to...
A Shot at Love II with Tila Tequila
...Jay aka "Jersey" aka annoying as hell. Seriously, every time I look at this guy I see pure evil. If I were a producer of the show I would have extra security around the areas he is at all times. There really is just some hidden evil in that guy, and how or why an immature weirdo like that is on the show and someone with real passion like George gets the boot... who knows...
What I do know is now that George is gone, again, the show just seriously nose dived. Lisa was always full of hot air, I do not miss seeing her go, but George was just really damn cool, and again with him gone, the whole show just went down.
To be honest, I don't believe in the show at all though. Tila is a master manipulator of people and she is just taking advantage of this show and her 15 minutes of fame, it isn't about love at all, she's in it for the business.
Again, why do I even watch this show? I have no idea. But I do, for entertainment I guess, like I said, I equate it to WWE - we know it is fake - but we watch it to be entertained anyways.
Bloodninja
This isn't anything new at all, but every time I read it I fall out of my chair laughing. The whole site is NSFW, and the bloodninja logs themselves are equally NSFW... but man are they funny!
